The Prommers'
Orchestra and Chorus is made up entirely of Promenaders, the group of
dedicated music lovers which, for over 100 years, has stood to hear
the Promenade Concerts, now held every year in the Royal Albert Hall.
From 1994 to 2001, we gave a concert outside the Hall towards the end
of the season and elsewhere at other times of the year. The Proms are
probably unique in being the only music festival in the world where
one of the concerts is given by the audience. We may also be the only
orchestra and chorus to have rehearsed inside the Albert Hall and then
given its concert outside.
Our members are
not only adult amateurs but also include school children, some of whom
are on their way to music college, music students and working professionals.
The only requirement is to be a Promenader, play or sing at least to
the level of a good British Amateur Orchestra (especially sight reading)
and be prepared to work for nothing.
Since our beginnings
we have given 14 concerts and raised over £3,000 for charity. In 2002, changes
in the Official Proms Programmes and building at the Albert Hall meant we had to
change our approach and last year, instead of outside the Hall during the Season,
the Prommers' Prom took place near by a few weeks later.
